In July 1866 the first trans-Atlantic submarine cable constructed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company was put into service. Today, the world connects more than 320 of these cables, but bandwidth problems, latency issues, and political conflicts mean that telcos around the globe continue to explore new routes for faster and more reliable services. Current projects include cables from Africa to South America, Brazil to the USA and plans to link Canada, Europe and Japan via the Arctic Ocean. This session will explore the future of submarine connectivity what will the next 150 years have in store?
