Due to the vast traffic exchange that MIX handles, it is the biggest Internet Exchange in Italy and one of the main in Europe.

Milano Internet Exchange was founded as a Ltd Company in 2000. MIX owns a fully redundant and carrier neutral facility in Milano, where more than 50 carriers network terminations are present. MIX switching platform currently interconnects more than 200 Internet Service providers, Content Owners and Distributors. Peak internet traffic exchanged today is more than 500 Gbps.

Mix network infrastructure spans over several PoPs over the Milan metro area, and is also active inside Open Hub Med neutral data center facilities in Palermo Sicily.

Mix was born to promote the development of Internet in Italy, and to improve the interconnection among different ISPs and relevant Internet players operating in Italy. It is now evolving into one of the major South Europe hubs, exploiting Italy position in the Med basin with respect to submarine cables routes and increasing interconnection demand among Continental Europe, Middle Est and Asia.

Mix is a point of “multiple interconnection” in which the networks of each player (ISP, carrier, content provider, hoster etc...) interconnect themselves to exchange mainly, but not only, IP traffic (through peering and PNI) efficiently and with advantageous costs.
