Founded in 1998, TSF is recognised as the world’s leading emergency telecommunications non-profit organisation. In its 17 year history, TSF has led emergency relief efforts in more than 66 countries, setting up critical communications facilities in war-torn and disaster zones. Following a partnership formed in September 2012, in January 2014 Capacity Media joined a group of world-class companies and institutions as one of TSF’s Official Partners. Through this partnership, Capacity Media has supported the valuable work carried out by TSF, including contributions to relief efforts in the Philippines following Typhoon Hagupit, and in Nepal following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Donations from Capacity Media, our generous sponsors, runners and raffle ticket buyers have meant that so far we have been able to donate over $98,000 to TSF to support local populations.

NEPAL: Earthquake, 2015

Following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25 April, 77km west of Kathmandu, TSF deployed a team on 26 April to the affected area to work alongside Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams from across the world. Whilst on the ground, a second earthquake hit the country on 12 May measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale leaving the number of fatalities following both disasters at over 8,600.

TSF quickly put high speed satellite connections in place to create a WiFi environment for the operation coordination centre dedicated to search and rescue. The teams also trekked for 4 days to reach the foothills of the Himalayas cut off by the earthquake to offer free satellite calls to local communities allowing them to contact their families and organise personalised assistance.

With this connectivity support to the UN and international NGOs to date over 7,000 family members have been reunited during the TSF operations.

SYRIA: Conflict since 2012

Since the conflict in Syria began back in 2012, TSF has been present helping to connect 18 hospitals in Syria and providing vital communications links to the benefit of emergency medical workers, doctors and consultants.

These connections mean heightened coordination between field workers and hospitals, the ability for doctors to share experiences and diagnoses with medical colleagues around the country, tele-monitoring is possible to ensure the efficient management of services in field hospitals and medical professionals can be aided by their counterparts around the world. In total 102,100 people are treated each month in the health centres, 14,559 of which are children and increased coordination has helped serve 85,082 of the most seriously injured populations.

IRAQ-KURDISTAN: Security for aid workers

In 2013, a total of 460 aid workers fell victim to violent attacks and kidnapping, and with the humanitarian field becoming an ever more dangerous environment in which to work, in 2014 TSF implemented its Telecom Devices for Security (TDS) measures to help ensure the security of its fellow NGOs whilst carrying out aid operations in the field.

Following the advancement of ISIS through Northern Iraq, TSF intervened in several domains bringing telecoms and new technologies to both the displaced populations and relief workers in Iraqi Kurdistan. Using the latest in satellite tracking technology and making this available to the UN ensured the safety of thousands of UN agents on the ground during their largest mass humanitarian distribution to date.

PHILIPPINES: Typhoon Hagupit, 2014

Typhoon Hagupit tore through thed Philippines in December 2014 leaving countless floods and landslides in its wake, and destroying entire villages leaving thousands of families uprooted in the provinces of Samar and Masbate.

To support the local populations, TSF immediately deployed a team who positioned mobile satellite connections in the city hall and hospital of Dolores, and also in the municipal buildings of Oras and Borongan, allowing for better coordination and information flow between field teams, UN regional offices and UN agencies. The typhoon affected more than 137,000 people in the Masbate region alone, where TSF’s travelled to offer some 30,000 families priority calls to contact their loved ones and take the first steps towards rebuilding their lives.
