MYANMAR - A POTENTIAL NEW ICT HUB FOR SOUTH EAST ASIA?

Basic international connectivity is often still an issue within Myanmar. The country still seems to struggle with clarifying regulations around spectrums and international gateways. At this point in time Myanmar still relies on a single cable for submarine connection. Yet, visionary thinkers are already eyeing its potential to become the next ICT hub for Southeast Asia. Myanmar has a key geographical advantage, bordering not only five nations, but more importantly India and China, the countries representing the world’s largest Internet-connected populations. This session will debate what needs to happen on a national basis to leapfrog and enable Myanmar to provide 21st century digital services. Moreover, it will look at the Southeast Asian region as a whole, to discover how Myanmar could leverage off regional development plans, such as the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway and the Silk Road initiative, to advance the country’s goal of establishing itself as an ICT hub.

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY - DEVELOPING THE COUNTRY'S INFRASTRUCTURE

Since the opening of the Myanmar telecoms market, infrastructure development has been number one topic on all agendas. Great advances have been made but many white spaces remain. Rural and especially border areas are underserved, not just by fibre but also towers, and the data centre landscape is still in its infancy. This session will discuss development plans, alternative ways of reaching rural areas, financing, including the potential of a universal service fund, and regulation in an attempt to understand what needs to happen to create and all-encompassing network for the country.
